A few days later, I bought a Ping Ultrasonic Sensor by Parallax. This video shows the sensor properly wired and operational as can be seen by way of the build-in LED on the Ping. Not yet having any servos or motors of any kind, I built a script to test the Ping which would flash the red light when an object was within 8 cm of it.

very cool project - i can't wait to see what you do with it. I was searching for "guarduino" to see if the name was taken - i recently rigged up an arduino board to my doors, locks, and doorbell, and set it to log any activity to an off-site database. I'll be happy to share any of my code or resources with you!
